Dallas, Minneapolis to Host 2013, 2014 USAV GJNC
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 23, 2012) – USA Volleyball announced today during its Annual Meetings that Dallas and Minneapolis will host the 2013 and 2014 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC), respectively.
The USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships attracts nearly 9,500 athletes and over 20,000 spectators annually. The tournament crowns 19 champions in age divisions ranging from 12 to 18. The event, showcasing the top talent from across the nation, also draws hundreds of college recruiters looking for the next stars for their programs.
The City of Dallas will host the 2013 GJNC at the Dallas Convention Center. The event, hosted by the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau, will be played between June 28 and July 5.
“Dallas has always been a very volleyball friendly location,” USA Volleyball Senior Director Tom Pingel said. “We know that our return to the Metroplex with the GJNC will be a great event.”
Dallas has hosted several USA Volleyball national championship events, including the 1998 and 2008 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships and the 1998 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships. Dallas will also host the final intercontinental round of the FIVB World League June 29 to July 1 at the Dallas Convention Center Arena before hosting the 2012 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships July 1-8. Dallas has previously hosted the USA Volleyball Open National Championships in 1960, 1996, 2002 and 2011.
Dallas has many entertaining options for free time outside the scheduled event. For anyone interested in shopping and eating, Greenville Avenue is the place for eclectic boutiques and exceptional restaurants. A historical stop for some could be the JFK Memorial, a dedication to the life of President John F. Kennedy. The Galleria Dallas boasts some of the best shopping in the state, while attractions like Six Flags over Texas and the Dallas World Aquarium are fun stops for relaxation.
The City of Minneapolis will host the 2014 GJNC at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The event, hosted by the North Country Region, will be played between June 25 and July 2.
“Minneapolis has proven to be a wonderful host city for our National Events,” Pingel said. “We know this will continue with the GJNC returns in 2014.”
Minneapolis has previously hosted several USA Volleyball events. Minneapolis hosted the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships in 2007. The USA Volleyball Open National Championships have taken place in Minneapolis in 1945, 2003 and 2009. Other signature USA Volleyball national events played in Minneapolis include the 2006 and 2011 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships.
Minneapolis was recently named one of the 15 Coolest North American cities by MSN Travel. It is home to world-class museums, lush parks and gardens, an active nightlife, shopping with the Mall of America and major league professional sporting draws such as the Minnesota Twins during the summer months.
